KeyCorp named Chris Doll as chief strategy officer and deputy finance chief Monday, bringing to a close his nearly three-year stint at City National Bank.
He served as executive vice president and CFO at City National, joining the Royal Bank of Canada subsidiary from Cincinnati-based Fifth Third. He held various roles during his 13 years at Fifth Third, eventually becoming senior vice president and head of investor relations.
“Chris brings a strong track record of leadership, deep financial expertise, and a results-oriented approach that will help advance our strategic priorities,” said Clark Khayat, KeyCorp’s CFO and head of technology, in a prepared statement. “His ability to align strategy, financial discipline, and execution will be instrumental as we continue to drive long-term growth and create value for our stakeholders.”
Doll will report to Khayat and will serve as a member of the $191 billion-asset bank’s finance leadership team and executive council.
Khayat himself was elevated from strategy chief to CFO in 2022, leaving the bank without a chief strategy officer. Creating a dedicated CSO role is a “logical organizational step,” said RBC Capital Markets analysts Gerard Cassidy and Thomas Leddy in an investor note.
The bank “has consistently articulated a strategy centered on growing its priority fee-based businesses” such as investment banking, commercial payments, and wealth management; generating positive operating leverage; and reaching at least 15% return on tangible common equity by year-end 2027, analysts wrote. CEO Chris Gorman singled out those three businesses as “performing exceptionally well,” during the bank’s quarterly earnings call last month.
A dedicated CSO to focus on these priorities “should support that agenda,” the RBC analysts wrote.
