TD has named HSBC veteran Taylan Turan its new operations chief and BMO alum Simon Fish its new general counsel.
Turan, who will start at TD on Sept. 29, is succeeding Raymond Chun. Chun was promoted from COO to CEO in February in the midst of TD’s anti-money laundering scandal.
Turan joins TD from HSBC, where his 16-year career culminated in his time as global chief executive of retail banking. He recently spearheaded the global integration of the bank’s international wealth and premier banking arms, announced last October. Prior to HSBC, he held leadership positions at Barclays and Citi.
Fish, who joins TD on Sept. 15, spent 13 years as general counsel at BMO. He’d joined BMO with no financial industry experience months before the global financial crisis – a time industry experience didn’t matter because “the playbook was being rewritten,” he told Financial Post last year. During his tenure, he helped BMO integrate Indiana’s First National Bank & Trust, which it had acquired two years prior, and Marshall & Ilsley Corp., which it acquired for $4.1 billion in 2011.
He received a lifetime achievement award at the Canadian General Counsel awards in 2024, having previously held the position at Shell Canada and Brazilian mining giant Vale Inco.
At TD, Fish will replace General Counsel Jane Langford, who is leaving the bank after 13 years and three as general counsel. Langford will remain a special adviser to the bank until the end of 2025, and will soon “seek her next professional challenge beyond TD,” the bank said.
“TD is building a bank for the future, with top talent, and a sharp focus on disciplined execution and client experience leadership,” Chun said in a prepared statement. “I’m energized to work with these strong executives and leaders across the Bank to drive change, support clients and accelerate growth.”
Also announced Wednesday, 37-year TD veteran Paul Whitehead will become executive vice president and global head of client and colleague experience and marketing, effective Dec. 1. Whitehead will report to Turan.
Additionally, Christine Morris, TD’s senior executive vice president of transformation, enablement and customer experience, will retire in December after 36 years with the bank. Her responsibilities will transfer to Turan and Whitehead in the coming weeks, according to an announcement.
